Miss Rumphius

At the beginning of the year, the second graders started their studies of new plants.  We gathered lupin seeds and carefully planted them.  Now that it's spring, we have seen the new plants beginning to grow.  We were so inspired by the story Miss Rumphius that we took crayon and chalk to paper to illustrate gardens of our own.  (We had as much chalk on us as on the paper!)

Birds! Birds! Birds! ... and a Turkey?

In one day, we had a crowd of birds at our feeder.  Goldfinches, a pileated woodpecker, a downy woodpecker, a rose breasted grosbeak, a ruby throated hummingbird, finches, crows, and  a nuthatch.

And a turkey?  This turkey has taken up residence around the school building.  Sometimes it's up on a teacher's car, sometimes under the feeders, and sometimes watching itself in the glass doors.
It's never dull at our school!

Outdoor Education Day

We had a fun day filled with science and learning.
We used compasses and found our true north.  It was a great game designed as a lead-up activity for orienteering.
We found far more critters in the woods and water than we had expected.

Many, many thanks to the volunteers and local wildlife agencies.  They all worked as a team for the love of learning...hands-on and outdoors.

Ribbit Ribbit

Thanks to Jenna H. and family, we have the beginnings of another life cycle to study, observe, and record data and changes.

Motion - Basics of Physics

We made tops.  We learned about objects moving when acted upon by a force.  To spin effectively, the bulk of the weight needs to be near the base of the shaft.
