Veterinarian Visit

We were lucky to have Dr. J. visit our classroom and teach us all about pets -feeding, exercise, kindness, and love.  She taught us how she cares for animals, and showed us what she does in her job. She patiently answered about a hundred questions. What an inspiration and great role model!

We Love Art

We have the best art teacher ever!  Her lessons are always engaging and insightful.  The concepts stretch the skills and thinking of each child.  We are so proud of our art award.  Just as exciting was the "extra art class" Ms. D. arranged for us.  She put hours into stringing the mini looms so our students could do "real weaving".  Cool!  Now that's what I call a meaningful reward!
Sorry this is blurry!

Chemical Engineers

Who ever said science is neat and tidy?  First graders jumped at the chance of being chemical engineers.  They were given a variety of ingredients.  They had to determine how much salt, water, and flour they would need to make successful playdough.  After dozens of trial and error attempts (and getting flour up to their eyeballs) the young engineers were victorious.  They made a "product" which paralleled the theme of our unit.  Our heart/penny/Valentine/President's Day/Abe Lincoln salt dough necklaces would make anyone happy!

Dino Digs - Fossil Studies

Second Graders have studied how fossils were formed and how paleontologists use tools to extract them.  Our plaster-of-paris models provided just as much fun and learning.

Petrified wood, plaster casts of animal tracks from our school forest, and purchased fossils added to the excitement.

Service Learning - Pop Tops

The Ronald McDonald House is a place for parents to stay while their child is undergoing treatment for difficult illnesses.  Parents can be close to their child without paying costly hotel fees.  Some of our Lakewood School parents have been able to use the Ronald McDonald House in the past. This is made possible through pop top collections.

Therefore, our first and second graders decided to revive our school's pop-top collecting efforts.  At S.H.'s conference I asked if he and his dad would consider making a house to collect pop tops.  Less than a week later, we had an amazing Ronald McDonald house.  The second graders painted it and then wrote a mini-skit to introduce it to the other classrooms.  First and second grade students will be in charge of collecting the pop tops and delivering them to McDonalds.  We are happy to undertake this important work!
