Combining Social Studies and Outdoor Education

In Social Studies we have begun studying maps.  We decided to map our School Forest trail.  We hiked around and made a rough sketch (just like the original map makers did).  It was a nice day so we could store our mittens in our trail boxes while we drew.  We roughed in our favorite features.

These nifty boxes were made by an eagle scout in our area.  They are perfectly designed to carry our tools inside and clip our work to the outside.  The handles make them easy to carry.
The final products reflect our goals for this activity.  The maps have a title, a key, and all the main features.  Lots of learning for first and second graders.
